In Luke 18 and Luke 19 we see the difference between law and grace in two different men with two different results.
Luke 19: 1 Then Jesus entered and passed through Jericho. Now behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich. And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not because of the crowd, for he was of short stature. So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Him, for He was going to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and saw him, and said to him, “Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” So he made haste and came down, and received Him joyfully. But when they saw it, they all complained, saying, “He has gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner.”
First, why did Jesus suddenly stop and look up at Zacchaeus? I mean there were scores of people all around Christ but here is one little man that suddenly drew the attention of Jesus among the entire crowd. What drew Christ’s attention to this little man in a tree? The answer is found in the words sought to see. The words sought to see in the original Greek implies more than just a casual seeker, Zacchaeus was more than just a casual curiosity seeker. He was one who was very determined to see Jesus because he had head that this man was changing people’s lives and Zacchaeus was looking for an answer to a changed life. He knew that his life was a mess that he was out of control bound by greed and selfishness. I mean everyone who knew him saw him as a sinner. A tax collector was seen as a very greedy person in that day who cared for nothing but himself, but Zacchaeus in his heart was looking for change and the Lord who searches and knows the hearts of all men knew this. Men look on the outward but God always looks at the heart, but no matter how hard Zacchaeus tried to change he could not the more he tried the more he failed.. So Zacchaeus was not just a casual curiosity seeker as someone would be to see a movie star in town but he was seeking for change.
This reminds me of a story about a trip I once took to New York City. I was staying in a hotel right off of Time Square and one morning I stepped out of the hotel and across the street was a crowd of people, so of course my curiosity was aroused and I wanted to go over and see what the crowd was all about. As I got to where the crowd was I peaked over the heads of the crowd and low and behold it was Beyonce . My first thought was wow this is cool! You don’t see this everyday and it was one of those moments that you don’t forget but this moment does not even compare to the moment that I first met Christ! Nor does it compare with my desire to still see Jesus every day.
So Zacchaeus was more than just a casual seeker he was a man on a mission looking for change and anyone seeking Jesus for change will always cause him to stop in his tracks and draw His attention. Jesus saw the cry of Zacchaeus heart and that’s what drew Jesus to Zacchaeus
The crowd however didn’t see what Christ saw they saw a sinner but Jesus saw a seeker.
But when they saw it, they all complained, saying, “He has gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner. Again people always have a tendency to judge on the outside but God always sees the heart
Now the main thing we want to notice in this story is how that it was the unconditional love, acceptance and grace that changed the heart of Zacchaeus and not law. After Zacchaeus received Christ into his house Zacchaeus makes a remarkable statement.
Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold.”
I mean there was no law that told Zacchaeus to do all these things except one law and that was the law of love that touched and changed his heart. I mean all of a sudden we see a sinner changed into a saint! And the only thing that took place to make this happen was when Jesus said I want to come in to your house and dine with you.
And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham; 10 for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
Zacchaeus again represents a heart that is seeking Christ because he knows he needs a change in his heart and this change cannot come through the law or self determination but it can only come by grace through faith.
Now we see the young rich ruler who like Zacchaeus had abundance but unlike Zacchaeus the young rich ruler boasted in the law and his ability to keep it and we know when we trust the law we will always fall short.
Jesus Counsels the Rich Young Ruler
Luke 18:18
Now a certain ruler asked Him, saying, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”
So Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. 20 You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery,’ ‘Do not murder,’ ‘Do not steal,’ ‘Do not bear false witness,’ ‘Honor your father and your mother.’
And he said, “All these things I have kept from my youth.”
So when Jesus heard these things, He said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”
But when he heard this, he became very sorrowful, for he was very rich.
Notice the difference in the two men. Zacchaeus who admitted he was a sinner and who knew he needed Christ for change suddenly had a change of heart and was willing to sell everything and make amends for all his wrong doings where as the young rich ruler who put his trust more in his self and boasted about keeping the law had little to no change of heart. Love and Grace is the only thing that has the power to change a person rom the inside out! The law has no power to produce change. The law was given by God to us, not to produce change but to show us our desperate need for Christ
Notice when Jesus simply extended his love and grace to Zacchaeus and not law that love caused Zacchaeus heart to radically change and he was than willing to give up everything .. Gods love and grace and not law is the only thing that can produce this kind of change in your heart
Two men Two different results.
Both men were well off but only one had a change of heart.
In closing we are to always preach Gods unconditional love and grace and not Law..
